A visit to Hanshan Temple 寒山寺

11 January, 2008 (20:03) | China, Travels

About a half mile from my place, is Hanshan Temple ??? (also known as Cold Mountain Temple). Its a lot cheaper to visit than the gardens (20 yuan)and also pretty touristy - At the gift shop they have buddhas you can do prayer to, then purchase :-p - Got a free sticker out of them though :-). Overall though, I’d say its worth a visit , it looks like its still a temple in practice…see monks walking around and do their occasional prayers/chants…then again, they could just be actors, but still pretty convincing :-)

According to Lonely Planet China 2007

About 2km west of the Garden to Linger In, this temple (Hanshan S; 24 Hanshansi Long; admission 20Y, with Maple Bridge 45; 7:30am-5:30pm) was named after the 7th century poet-monk Han Shan.

Today, the temple holds little interest except for a stele by poet Zhang Ji immortalising both the nearby Maple bridge and the temple bell (since removed to Japan). However, the fine walls and the humpback bridge are woth seeing.
